Mission of the Children’s Defense Fund

The Children’s Defense Fund Leave No Child Behind® mission is to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start, a Fair Start, a Safe Start and a Moral Start in life and successful passage to adulthood with the help of caring families and communities.

CDF provides a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor children, children of color and those with disabilities. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investments before they get sick, drop out of school, get into trouble or suffer family breakdown.

CDF began in 1973 and is a private, nonprofit organization supported by individual donations, foundation, corporate and government grants.

Position Overview:

The purpose of this position is to help CDF address donor retention and donor engagement. This role will coordinate all outbound donor correspondence and communication – either on a one-on-one basis or group basis, other than direct mail appeals. Develop donor retention and cultivation treatment streams for specific profiles, groups, or segments of donors based on audience profiles and file segmentation. Ensure CDF’s “personal touch” with donors when we become aware of significant life events (birthdays, deaths, marriages, divorces, job promotions or changes, births, graduations, etc.). Assist with new donor research and prospective donor outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Closely monitor trending and key metrics for CDF donor retention, attrition, renewals and upgrades with the support of the CDO and the Development Database Manager.

  2. Develop one-on-one donor communication treatments based on:

    1. Specific information or inquiries generated by incoming donor gifts or communication;

    2. Special treatment streams for first-time donors to CDF in coordination with the CDO and the Development Database Manager.

    3. Special treatment streams for donors upgrading their engagement with CDF through gift amount, gift frequency or new channel engagements.

  3. Develop group communication treatments in conjunction with the CDO and the Development Database Manager for segments of CDF’s constituent file including but not limited to:

    1. Individuals nearing their annual gift “renewal” cycle and at risk of lapsing;

    2. Individuals who are newly lapsed (12+ months since last gift);

  4. Conduct prospect research on potential donors to CDF and background research on first-time donors to CDF, especially those at major gift levels.

  5. Develop treatment program to cultivate donors as CDF becomes aware of key life events such as birthdays, marriages, births, graduations, and death of family members.

  6. Focus on the development of sustainable processes and systems which utilize and leverage available technologies. Avoid manually intensive processes whenever feasible.

  7. Manage and complete additional assignments from the CDO and CDF’s President, and assist when appropriate with other Development team initiatives and projects.
