Job Title: Content Distribution Partnership

Summary:
The Content Distribution Partnerships (or “Content Partnerships”) team is responsible for licensing live games, ancillary content, and game highlights of the NBA, WNBA, G League, NBA 2K League, BAL, and USAB to both traditional and emerging domestic and global distributors of content. Content Partnerships is looking for a curious and dedicated intern to join our team this summer and learn about all aspects of our business from identifying potential new partners to performing analysis that will inform licensing strategy to working through deal terms to managing our new and existing partnerships. Curiosity about media distribution, attention to detail, and the ability to see patterns and draw connections between projects will serve the successful Content Partnerships intern well. Applicants without prior experience working in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint should be excited to learn about that software – and about the fundamentals of legal contracts – over the course of the summer.

The Content Partnerships fellow will shadow members of the team in internal and external meetings and will take notes to synthesize information, revising and iterating versions of the notes under the guidance of the intern manager to tailor the writing for an executive audience. Throughout the summer, the intern can expect to participate in and contribute to projects such as creating backup materials for senior leadership to use in preparation for meetings with the NBA Board of Governors, ensuring successful partner activations at live WNBA events like WNBA All-Star, and researching and reporting on potential new partners.

The HBCU fellow will also work closely with Content Partnerships’ MBA intern on a summer-long research project and presentation. Over the course of the summer, the two interns will identify and get approval from their manager for a strategic project of interest in the content distribution space, research and present their initial findings to a small working group, create an official presentation incorporating prior feedback, and present their final findings and recommendations to the full Content Partnerships team to cap off the summer.

Skills:

  • Financial modeling experience
  • Experience performing competitive analysis
  • Experience or at least interest in learning to read legal contracts
  • Prior work or intern experience in the media industry, ideally at a major content-distribution company (e.g., Disney, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, etc.)
  • Facility and familiarity with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Innate curiosity about the evolving media landscape and consumers’ consumption of said content
  • Basic understanding of financial terms and how companies make money
  • A basic interest in learning to understand how contracts are structured
  •  Knowledge of new and emerging platforms and networks being used by their peers

Responsibilities:

  • Capstone project identifying new content distribution opportunities for the NBA, WNBA, and recommendations for the Content Distribution Partnerships team
  • Perform market research to determine new content technologies and business opportunities, including in-depth review of existing content distribution decks, briefings, and contracts
  • Support preparations for major confidential live-game distribution negotiations and presentations to the NBA’s Board of Governors, and for activations at the WNBA’s major summer tentpoles.
  • Support key strategic projects, which may include (based on timing) FAST (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV) strategy, children’s content strategy, or G League live-game distribution strategy.
