Summary

We are seeking an experienced, committed and dynamic Development Marketing Director to join the Children's Defense Fund’s (CDF’s) Development team and help us raise funds for programs that make a difference in the lives of children. We are a national non-profit organization that is passionate about making a difference in the lives of our most vulnerable population. We are also in an exciting time of building out a new approach to fundraising for CDF. This position reports to the Chief Development Officer (CDO).

CDF provides a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor children, children of color and those with disabilities. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investments before they get sick, drop out of school, get into trouble or suffer family breakdown.

CDF began in 1973 and is a private, nonprofit organization supported by individual donations, foundation, corporate and government grants.

Position Overview

Working closely with the CDO, other Development department staff, and the CDF Communications team, the Development Marketing Director will be directly responsible for directing direct mail, digital and other fundraising campaigns in conjunction with the CDO, other Development team members and external marketing vendors.

Responsibilities

  1. Manage a staff of fundraisers to raise individual gifts through direct mail, digital and other programs.
  1. Implement campaign-specific fundraising budget, schedule an annual calendar for CDF’s fundraising program in conjunction with the CDO and other Development team members.
  1. Create and execute a year over year testing strategy and calendar for all fundraising programs with the assistance of fundraising staff to implement.
  1. Monitor and analyze all relevant metrics and analytics for CDF’s marketing programs, including direct mail, digital and other fundraising efforts. Based on results, recommend adjustments or changes within specific campaigns and/or overall fundraising efforts.
  1. Establish and monitor progress against marketing fundraising goals for specific CDF campaigns as part of CDF’s annual revenue goals.
  1. Ensure all out going fundraising messaging and content are accurate, mission-centric, and relevent throughout the year.
  1. Oversee the fundraising content and functionalities on CDF’s website in coordination with the CDO, the Development Digital Marketing Manager and the CDF Communications team.
  1. Prepare and/or coordinate the preparation of CDF marketing program reports with respect to current results and future plans in coordination with the CDO and external marketing vendors.
  1. Work closely with the CDO and major gift staff to ensure all messaging is consistent and the flow of low-level donors are making their way to the major gifts team.
  1. Coordinate with database team to ensure donor records are tracked properly and maintained to keep data integrity. Work to produce highly efficient integration between all marketing programs.
  1. Work with the donor support group to ensure best practices are in place with donor services.
  1. Research new fundraising revenue sources for possible future implementation.
  1. Direct and mitigate additional assignments from the CDO, and assist when appropriate and possible with other Development team initiatives and projects.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in direct marketing with experience in both digital marketing and general marketing. Experience in nonprofit fundraising and/or nonprofit programs is strongly preferred;
  • Previous supervisory experience;
  • Demonstrated passion for CDF’s mission;
  • Demonstrated ability to write and develop creative content which targets a variety of audiences;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in writing succinctly with excellent grammar, spelling and proof-reading. Excellent writing and attention to detail is imperative;
  • Ability to produce high quality documents utilizing Microsoft Office including proficiency with Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Demonstrated ability to create charts and graphs which visually convey complex data or concepts;
  • Work effectively and collaboratively with CDF Development team members, staff from other CDF departments and offices, and occasionally CDF board members;
  • Must be a self-starter capable of working independently and under tight and sometimes competing deadlines. Ability to manage multiple conflicting deadlines and maintain disciplined adherence to individual and team goals;
  • Occasional travel may be required;
  • Experience and proficiency in working with marketing and design software and donor database software, Raiser's Edge strongly preferred;
  • Commitment to continual learning and professional development; keep pace with ever-changing best practices in digital marketing;
  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree required.
