Summary
The Children’s Defense Fund seeks an experienced, strategic and creative Digital Communications Manager. The Digital Communications Manager will report to the Communications Director and be responsible for developing and executing a digital communications strategy which engages CDF’s audiences across a variety of platforms to learn about the issues impacting children in America and take action to improve the odds for children.

CDF provides a strong, effective and independent voice for all the children of America who cannot vote, lobby or speak for themselves. We pay particular attention to the needs of poor children, children of color and those with disabilities. CDF educates the nation about the needs of children and encourages preventive investments before they get sick, drop out of school, get into trouble or suffer family breakdown.

CDF began in 1973 and is a private, nonprofit organization supported by individual donations, foundation, corporate and government grants.

Core Responsibilities:
  • Develop and execute a multi-platform digital communications and social media strategy to move audiences to action
  • Write and edit compelling, effective content for digital vehicles including website, social media and email
  • Work in conjunction with members of the Communications and Development teams to advance efforts to improve and drive more traffic to CDF’s website; keep website updated with relevant news and materials; track and utilize analytics to understand and optimize how visitors interact with website
  • Collaborating across internal teams, create and implement an organizational social media strategy, including identifying existing and potential audience characteristics for various social media platforms; executing a tailored content strategy to engage those audiences; and tracking and utilizing analytics and A/B testing to increase engagement
  • Draft, edit and disseminate newsletters, action alerts and other email-based outreach to constituents, tracking and optimizing distribution
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging trends in digital communications and identify and implement creative uses of CDF’s digital channels
  • Create and edit graphics and videos for dissemination via digital channels
  • Work closely with Development Digital Marketing Manager and other members of the Development team on shared digital properties and strategies, including digital storytelling, email marketing, website optimization, SEO/SEM, and digital advertising
  • Provide digital communications support and counsel to CDF staff across National and State offices

Essential Qualifications:
  • A passion for the mission of CDF and a commitment to improving the odds for children in America
  • Experience creating and executing digital strategies to engage audiences and move them to action to advance organizational objectives
  • A keen understanding of how to optimize content for various digital and social media channels to reach specific audience segments
  • Superb writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Strong track record of taking the lead on creative projects
  • An ability to translate complex information into simple, concise content and compelling stories
  • Experience using multimedia, such as video and graphics, to enhance digital and social content
  • An ability to be flexible, work effectively under pressure, balance multiple projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively both independently and in teams to achieve organizational goals
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Three or more years of communications and/or digital engagement experience
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in online organizing and/or advocacy campaign communications
  • An understanding of the media and policy landscape surrounding issues impacting children in America, including poverty, health and nutrition, child welfare, early childhood and K-12 education, gun violence and the youth justice system.
  • Working knowledge of digital tools and services including WordPress, Blackbaud/Luminate Online, Canva, Piktochart, Hootsuite and Google Analytics
  • An ability to edit photo and video content using programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Final Cut Pro
